Ghastly Awards - September 2012 Update

Horror comics are becoming more and more frequent in our reading culture, and the Ghastly Awards are here to recognize, through peer nominations, those that shine the brightest. As a matter of fact so far this year, this entire list of titles (and some self published books) have already come out. We encourage all Comic Creators to take the time to head over to www.ghastlyawards.com and nominate those who you think are the best so far in your eyes.

Revival #3 (Image) -  When most comics make or break moment comes in issue #3 Tim Seeley and Mike Norton still have you by the throat giving you little chance to breath with this rural noir story that holds the creepiness of a classic horror movie. The story is a new take on life after death and what can happen when the dead come back to life and they don't want to eat your brains. Crossed: Wish You Were Here Vol 1 (Avatar) takes the first 22 episodes of the Avatar Press webcomic and puts it into a TPB for your non-interwebs enjoyment.  A group of survivors take shelter on small Cava island.  Simple enough.  But the Crossed are still out there, and people being people, there's lots of sturm-und-drang.  With all the horror in a world where the Crossed rule, is surviving enough?  Gorgeous art, intriguing characters, great flashback moments and plenty of horrific scenes.  Fair warning: ADULTS ONLY.  Seriously y'all. - Denise Dutton

The Strain #8 (Dark Horse): This comic series by David Laphan (based off the novel of the same name) continues along the path to utter debauchery in issue #8. If you are unfamiliar with the novel, it comes from the deepest, darkest recesses of the minds of Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) and Chuck Hogan (Prince of Thieves). To dive deep into the dark hollows of Del Toro’s imagination is to open yourself up to one depraved-ass party. Pasty, fat, blood-smeared zombie-vampire-monster-human hybrids walk free, murdering civilians in the sickest ways. It’s a pandemic that has Manhattan and the CDC reeling. Harvest #2 (Image Comics): Seeing as both my siblings are practicing doctors, I am subjected to medical discussions on a regular basis, and I like to believe I have come to understand the darker side of the profession. While A.J. Lieberman's medical world is over-the-top seedy, he offers a specific type of gore and unease that most horror fans are not accustomed to. Artist Colin Lorimer offers beautiful panel layouts and loads of blood, making Harvest one of the year's strongest mini-series so far. – Lonnie Nadler (www.Bloody-Disgusting.com)

Hoax Hunters #3 (Image Comics): We start to get some answers this issue - albeit bizarre ones - as to what's been causing the mass animal deaths down in the bayou, as well as theories on parallel universes, flaming skulls, grotesque monsters, and some intriguing background information on Hoax Hunter Jack Lawson. The series continues to mix good, solid horror elements with some genuinely funny situations and an intriguing and likeable cast of characters. The art and script continue to be strong, resulting in yet another fantastic new series from Image Comics in 2012. – Pedro Cabezuelo (http://www.rue-morgue.com/)

Godzilla: The Half-Century War #2 (of 5)- (IDW): James Stokoe's epic Kaiju monsterpiece roars through the Sixties in the latest installment, this time bringing Godzilla to Viet Nam at the height of the war!  A brilliant mixture of history and fantasy, we even get monster Anguirus on the scene, scaring away the Viet Cong! As great as the story is, the real draw here (hah! nice pun!) is Stokoe's immaculately detailed artwork. Page after page of insanely beautiful pen and inks and colors (assisted by Heather Breckel), kaiju battles and pure excitement; this book is a must have! Rebel Blood TPB (Image Comics): Nope, no way. There is absolutely no way I could have seen that coming, and that is why this book is getting a perfect score. Rebel Blood seemed to be heading down a nice little path of typical horror storytelling and then it took a right at the light. I think what Rossmo and Link were able to do here will be talked about for years to come. When the horror genre is filled with some typical zombie survival stories, which are great, it is always nice to see a team bring something new and fresh to the table. - Decapitated Dan (www.decapitateddan.com)

Tinnell and Vokes are back, and they are upping the ante with Flesh and Blood Book 2. Have no fear Hammer Horror fans, this book will take you right where you want to be. But what about those of us who don’t know much about Hammer Horror? Does this book relate to us? Can we enjoy it as well? The simple answer to those questions is a loud and proud “HELL YES!” While I will admit that the story took an odd time leap to the future, it did not take anything away from my overall reading experience. To clarify what I mean by that, at one point the story progresses what I think might be about 25 years. What I loved about Tinnell’s writing, was the fact that he was always pushing things in my face. From the great cast to the intense moments, it was all there.  I can not recall a single dull moment, it was just action, slower action, faster action and then more action. His dialogue comes across to me as very cinematic, which you would already know had you read my review of Riven.  With a story hitting all cylinders you might be wondering if the artwork was able to keep pace. Luckily Neil Vokes was not going to let the readers down. His art on this book is just GORE-Geous. Teamed with the coloring of Matt Webb, my eyes melted out of their sockets page after page. Vokes did an amazing job of being able to visually capture the great pace that was set in the story by Tinnell. Overall I could not be happier with what I just read. This book appeals to certain demographics that you won’t get with all horror comics. It has a great appeal to all horror comic readers, but it also crosses the stream and works for horror movie fans out there. This series is amazing, and I can not wait for more!

Holy $*!+! That about sums up what just happened at the end of this GORE-Geous and ARGH-Mazing book. Collecting the mini series, that was showcased during Deadworld Month in August from IDW, this book captures the same spirit as what came before, and leads readers into the future of this Dead’verse. The artwork by Makkonen is beautiful. I said it when I read Slaughterhouse, and I will say it again, Sami’s style is so perfect for this series. His character designs have a very creepy edge to them, placed into his dark backgrounds and my eyes just melt with joy. The issues that arose with Slaughterhouse, black and white art that at times was too dark, have been corrected by adding in color. I have to admit that when this was first announced I was not super excited about it, the series has always been black and white, but when I read the first issue my opinion changed. The colors add a dimension to this book that ups the feeling of how dark and depressing this world really is. The story in this “chapter” takes place 1 year after the events of Slaughterhouse. I personally do not think that you need to read the previous stories to grasp what is going on here, but I suggest that you do because it is amazing (pick up the omnibus).  I think the best way to sum up what happens in this book, is to really categorize it as a solid story, that is a great base to lead into what is to come. Reed is a master of detail in his writing. If you have ever read his St. Germaine books you will know this, and if not I suggest you do that as well. The way that he explains the concept of defending where the human survivors live, to the description of why it might be best for humans to live in breeding and work camps, left me floored. The pacing was perfect throughout the book, with plenty or build and some great action scenes. Then you get to the ending and it is such and amazing cliffhanger. I plan on sending 1 email to Gary a week to find out what happens next, just to get him moving on more issues ASAP. For almost 30 years Deadworld has been at the forefront of zombie and horror comics. It is a series I love more than anything, and this series took that love to a whole new level. I pray that more issues will be coming our way soon, because I need my fix as a Dead(world) Head. The perfect creative team worked on this book, and it would be a crying shame for it not to be a part of your collection. This is hopefully only just the beginning folks.

What do you get when you combine Zombies, the future, the army and holy shit awesomeness? Why you get Descent of the Dead of course!  My favorite thing about this issue, was that I did not have to go back and read the first two issues to recall what was going on. There is a fantastic recap on the inside cover, and I will even got out on a limb and say that this book is safe to just pick up and read. That is a huge comment to the writing of Perez, because when you self publish, there can be some big gaps in between issues. The story in this issue was a slowed down, take it all in, let it all build for what is to come. The dialogue is sharp, and some great thought and detail went into explaining what had happened in the city. Penavic has a style of artwork that I just love. It’s edge-y, and I just love that everything has this sharp look to it. His zombies are GORE-Geous too. This series is one I always say I need more of, and I am so happy that the guys are delivering such a great book. So guess what Tango team? I need more!!!!

Wow! This issue was more than I could have ever asked for. When it comes to reviewing anthologies, it is hard to really give them number that represents the entire book. Sometimes I don’t like the art on a certain story, or I don’t like a certain story. 86′d said to me, “Dan, you’re gonna like me, because I am solid on all levels.” So I took the book up on this challenge, and man was that statement 100% accurate. These 2 covers alone (Perry cover shown above) left my eyeballs on the floor. Perry and Hook won the battle to get me to turn the cover, and if you see this book you will do the same. Now since this is an anthology I will say that my favorite art I enjoyed most was anything done by Perry, Hook, Smallwood and Wroten. But it was all great looking stuff. Perry’s style really reminded me of the work of Charles Burns, so it was obvious to see why I liked it so much. The stories did range from Horror to Sci-Fi, but they were all off the wall creepy and disturbing. I loved the story “Full Circle”, it was a great choice to open the book with. The “A Day in the Life” stories were short and sweet involving some Classic Monsters. The last thing I have to mention is basically just a small little treat that was thrown in at the end of the book. Since this book plays on the classical horror comics, Perry and Hook included a fake ad page, and all I can say is I am getting a Big Ass Knife. This is hands down a solid horror anthology, that will hopefully surprise a great deal of people when they read it. I for one am highly anticipating more from these guys, because this issue was GORE-Geous!

Okay, seriously, WOW! When I read the solicit on this book, I knew to expect something good, but I didn’t know it was going to be this good. This book has the words “Turn me into a movie” written all over it. The artwork by Hampton did present a bit of a curve for me to get used to. I think that is primarily based on what I am guessing are water colors, and it is just something I am personally not used to seeing in comics today. Looking back at the pages now all I can say is that this book is GORE-Geous, and you have to be Howl-ing mad to not think that this is some of the best Werewolf art to date. The death scenes alone gave this book a solid 5 in terms of a score. The story presented here has already won awards in my mind. There were so many twists and turns, that there is no way, I would have been able to expect what would happen next. The cast just comes to life and shines on every single page. This book by Tinnell and Hampton should have the entire horror community (not just comics) talking, so please do yourself a favor, read this book and then spread the word. Now if you will excuse me I need to board a plane to Hollywood and go talk to some producers. READ THIS BOOK!

I think we should just straight up change the title of this book to “This Book is Pretty Damn Awesome, Why Do You Not Own it Yet?” Well I guess it’s not too catchy, but it really does sum up how great this book is. First of all you get the artwork of Guy Davis, and this man can draw “horror funny” (I am starting a new genre). He has such a great command on facial expressions, and being so good at them only makes this overall story that much better. I died laughing at the cheek shaving scene, and no I won’t tell you what that means, so just go read this book. When it comes to the stories, Frissen brought his A game. There is the perfect balance of emotions, horror and of course humor. Let me again refer to the fact that someone had to come up with the idea of cheek shaving. The way that Jerry writes the dialogue for Freddy is enough to tie my stomach up in knots. The translations are flawless, and this book is just a solid winner all around. This book is a prime example of what we are missing in American comics. Humanoids has done us all a favor and brought this to us now, so do not miss out, you will be sorry if you do.

Eww, gross, sick… Yuck! That’s right readers, my all time favorite Down Under-Ground Comic is back and packing a punch. This issue contains 13 different stories and pin-ups for your viewing/reading pleasure. I do think it has to be mentioned that this is a Mature title, so it contains topics like sex and death, and really everything possible that is in between. Some of my favorite creators from past issues are back in this issue and they deliver the laughs. Dexter Cockburn has a very funny story that plays on early Sci-Fi movie, and of course his artwork is amazing. David Degrand is back with some really hilarious comic strip style shorts. Frank Candiloro brings back the Millennial Monsters in what I think is their best short yet. My highlight of the issue though, was being introduced to Mady ‘Shimee’ G on the story “Black Acid”. Not only was it a fun read, it was GORE-Geous to look at. Every single page of this book has something unique and beautiful on it. I love getting new issues of Yuck! to take a look at, because it reminds me that you can have tons of fun with comics. This title delivers a home run with each and every single issue.

Rose Black: Demon Seed is an action packed thrill ride that combines horror and intense drama like I have not seen before. The artwork in this book is GORE-Geous. Carpenter’s cast is near perfect page after page. A big highlight to me was his representation of the vampires themselves. Giving them what I would consider more of a spider face, with very large fangs, they easily stand out in the crowded genre. I also want to throw mention to colorist Derek Dow, because his work on these pages was outstanding. While the artwork is great, the story is what really won me over here. Murphy and Campbell did a fantastic job on this book. The pacing is great, and there is no such thing as a dull moment with this book. The dialogue is sharp, and the whole package comes off so well. I definitely think that this book falls into the line of something like the new Vampirella and the Anita Blake books. Mixing military with vampires could only work if done right, and this creative team nailed it. When you see this book it doesn’t look to overwhelming, but it seriously took me 2 hours to read it. It is packed with story. This is a great read that looks beautiful, and I am proud to have siting on my shelf.

The Horsemen are back, and you better be strapped in for what is about to go down. Book 2 is a balls to the wall non-stop thrill ride that is going to punch you in the face and not look back. Following the events of the first book, Helldiver, The Chosen shows the rest of the formation of the group that will save Earth from its impending doom. You would think that the visuals could not get any better than they were before, but they did. Each page is alive with such vibrant color. The art by Bisley is so GORE-Geous. His character designs are flat-out jaw dropping, and the amount of detail in each panel is stunning. There is no way in Hell (pun intended) that this book could look any better. His designs for the Horsemen alone, left a craving in this decapitated head for posters, t-shirts and so much more. The story kicks it into full gear as we round and head towards finish line. Mendheim, Kennedy and Jaffee deliver a story that is perfect on every level. The highlight of this issue to me, was the explanation of why this cast was being chosen to save the world. The amount of detail in their pasts added a level of compassion to my mind that most comics can not make happen. I love these characters, and I love how they are being presented. Of course this is the middle book of the trilogy, so it covers what it needs to and leaves you craving more. I can not express how amazing this series has been so far. I am deeply saddened that it will end with the next book, but I think that there is so much more to explore in this universe. I would say run, don’t walk to your local shop to pick this one up, but I would be lying. You need to get a transporter and just zap yourself there, because you are missing out already if you do not have this book in your hands. READ IT, you will not be sorry. This is easily going to be in my top books of 2013 list.

They say that good things come to those who wait, so you better believe that this book is pretty damn good when it takes 5 years to come out. Collecting the rare #13 of Lenore Vol. 1 and issues #1 – #3 of Vol. 2, this book is a perfect starting point for someone who is new to Lenore. I have to start off by saying that issue #13 is possibly the funniest Lenore story I have ever read. Introducing Wicket as a character had me rolling on the floor, but when Lenore attends the birthday party I just lost it. I have said this in reviews before, but Dirge is one the same level as some of the greatest cartoonists ever when it comes to drawing facial expressions. So much humor is contained in the man’s artwork alone. The stories had me laughing so hard my head fell off. No matter how many times I go back and read them, they always make me laugh. Roman delivers on these jokes in the dialogue word balloon after word balloon. This title has inspired me to create an all new comic genre that I am calling “Horumor.” By combining some really GORE-Geous artwork with some of the best jokes in comics, it is easy to see what makes Lenore so great. This book contains two of my all time favorite Lenore tales (V1 #13 and V2 #3), and is a welcome addition to my shelves. I seriously can not praise this book any higher, and I highly suggest you take the time to check it out.

Ghastly Awards August 2012

Horror comics are becoming more and more frequent in our reading culture, and the Ghastly Awards are here to recognize, through peer nominations, those that shine the brightest. As a matter of fact so far this year, this entire list of titles (and some self published books) have already come out. We encourage all Comic Creators to take the time to head over to www.ghastlyawards.com and nominate those who you think are the best so far in your eyes.
    

Creators please remember that you can nominate up to 5 times throughout the year, so make your voice heard! For the month of June 2012 the judges are recommending you take a look at:

GODZILLA: THE HALF CENTURY WAR #1 (IDW) -  James Stokoe’s love of Godzilla comes crashing through in this first of a five part series. Fun, action-packed storytelling and lovingly detailed artwork highlight this inaugural issue. Stokoe’s lines are crisp and so is the tale, which will be told a decade at a time. Fierce, fun and flame-broiled! I can’t wait for the next city-stomping installment!  - Mike Howlett

BLACK KISS 2 #1 (IMAGE COMICS): Howard Chaykin revives his 80's erotic supernatural series in an all new 6 issue run that takes place 70 years before the first series with "the story behind the legendary story." Dark Horse Presents #15 (DARK HORSE): Dark Horse Presents is the perfect book if If you don’t have much time or money to spend on comics. It's one of the only monthly modern anthologies and it is the absolute best bang-for-your-buck deal out there. 8 dollars for over 80 pages of brand new, high quality storytelling. Issue #15 offers the final installment of  "Ghost: Resurrection Mary" that leads into a new series from Kelly Sue DeConnick and Phil Noto simply titled "Ghost", starting this Fall. While the story stands on its own, it establishes the mood perfectly for the upcoming series, which you don't want to miss. Deadworld: War of the Dead #1-5 (IDW): Holy $*!+! That about sums up what just happened at the end of this GORE-Geous and ARGH-Mazing book. Collecting the mini series, that was showcased during Deadworld Month in August from IDW, this book captures the same spirit as what came before, and leads readers into the future of this Dead’verse. The artwork by Makkonen is beautiful. I think the best way to sum up what happens in this book, is to really categorize it as a solid story, that is a great base to lead into what is to come. Reed is a master of detail in his writing. This is hopefully only just the beginning of what is to come! - Decapitated Dan (www.decapitateddan.com)
